Iowa Inmate Population is a private reference website, not a government office. It cannot confirm whether someone is in custody, release a person from jail or prison, post bond, change a court date, send money, schedule visitation, or pull an official booking, court, IDOC, BOP, ICE, or VINELink record for you.

Where to Look for an Iowa Inmate or Record

Iowa custody information depends on the agency that holds the person or created the record. Use the official channel that matches the situation, then verify details with that agency before traveling, sending money, relying on a release date, or making a legal decision.

  • For a recent arrest, county jail booking, local jail roster, bond question, visitation issue, or county jail record, start with the County Directory and choose the county where the arrest or booking likely occurred.
  • For a county facility name, regional jail route, IDOC institution, or detention-related location, use the Facility Directory.
  • For a sentenced Iowa state prisoner or a person under Iowa Department of Corrections supervision, use IDOC Offender Search. The IDOC search covers state custody and supervision; it is not a county arrest roster.
  • For an Iowa Department of Corrections public-records request, use the IDOC Open Records Request page. IDOC records are governed by Iowa Code chapter 22 and the IDOC-specific confidentiality rules in Iowa Code section 904.602.
  • For charges, case numbers, filings, dispositions, hearings, or court debt after an arrest, use Iowa Courts Online or the Iowa Judicial Branch court-record search guidance.
  • For a federal sentenced inmate, use the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator. Iowa residents and Iowa federal defendants may be held in BOP facilities outside Iowa.
  • For immigration detention, use the ICE Online Detainee Locator System. ICE searches generally require either an A-Number with country of birth or biographical details such as name, date of birth, and country of birth.
  • For custody-status or victim-notification alerts, use Iowa VINELink. VINELink is a notification service, not a complete jail roster or court-record database.
  • For booking-photo questions, review jail rosters and mugshots; availability depends on the county roster and the public-record limits that apply to the source record.
  • For court records tied to a jail booking, see court records after an arrest before assuming the jail roster has the full criminal case history.
